    2021 Master Workshop announced

LINT is excited to announce 2021 Masters workshop with clinician

    Michael Bashkin

    ARTIST. SCIENTIST. LUTHIER.

Michael Bashkin brings a unique vision and sensibility to the art of guitar-building – a philosophy that crystalized during his years teaching tropical forestry in Belize, Central America. Michael’s approach is holistic, merging his experience as a visual artist, a musician and a lifelong student of wood.

From Fort Collins, CO, Michael is also a scientist whose graduate studies at Colorado State University and post-graduate research at Duke University taught him about the mechanics of wood. He knows where wood has come from and how it’s evolving. He has studied the way trees are responding to climate change – and how the wood harvested from them can be sculpted and assembled to respond to energy in certain, very special ways. Having studied with such gifted luthiers as Ervin Somogyi and Harry Fleishman, he shares their abiding respect for both aesthetics and function – balanced elegantly.

In these unprecedented times... , Due to escalating COVID outbreaks... , Never before experienced... , herd immunity, spreader event, PPE, self isolation...   Tired of the new dialogue?

Well, lets get back to something (mostly) normal:

    20th Anniversary LINT Christmas meeting.

In compliance with all governmental authorities, LINT has requested and received written Meeting approval from the City of Mansfield. Per the permits and for everyone's safety, we will be wearing masks and practicing social distancing.

As in years before, Chris Jenkins is generously opening his home.  We are also working on an added streaming option available only to members.  (Stay tuned)

We will be having our traditional Luthier's Christmas gift exchange. To participate, bring a wrapped gift of interest to a luthier. Make it something you would be proud to have. No white elephants or joke gifts please.

This will also be an opportunity to renew your membership for 2021

As always, bring your projects to share with our members and guests. We all learn from each other's successes and challenges.

Fight COVID fatigue!  Mask up, come and celebrate the holidays with fellow luthiers!

    October 10, 2020 LINT Meeting

    Save the Date!

    Special Event!

Visit the Kinnaird Guitar Workshop in Nacogdoches, TX.

    Agenda:

    • Sharpening demonstration led by Matt Jacobs. This will concentrate on cabinet scrapers, because they are so useful to lutherie, and there are a couple of secrets to getting a good edge.
    • The main event will be a listening/discussion session
      • Our shop has built three test guitars with all ingredients identical except for backs/sides. One is mahogany, one is maple and one is rosewood.
      • The purpose of the test is to identify--if we can--what differences there are in the tone, and what we hear (or think we hear) contributed by the different backs and sides.
      • My hope is for a lively discussion of a tricky subject--sound.
        • Does rosewood really add sustain?
        • Does maple always sound "thin"?
        • Is mahogany always "dry"?
      • And then some discussion about what we're hearing, and just maybe how to describe it. Sound is like taste, quite difficult to put into words, but I hope to have some good back and forth on how to describe what we're hearing.
    • Of course, there will be the nickel tour of our shop, as well as the essential show and tell.
    • Also, we're going to be giving away some wood, and letting folks paw through that.
    • And YES! We will have some Tunnel 14 tops for sale. Folks can just pay me, and I'll write the check for the whole sale.
    • And Yes! (Now what would you pay?) We will be serving lunch. Barbecued brisket sandwiches with all the trimmings.
So come one, come all! We should have a good meeting...even if you have to drive a bit to get here.
